Pete Hines was kind enough to take some time out to sit down with PCN and discuss the recently released Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for Playstation 3.
Pete is the Vice President of public relations and marketing for Bethesda Softworks. He handles everyday pr stuff for the games that are released, everything from packaging to advertisements.
With so much talk circulating about the recently released Elder Scrolls we at PCN only thought it to be appropriate to conduct this interesting interview. Enjoy!
What inspired you to create The Elder Scrolls series?
Well, like all series it really started out as one game. We had an idea to do a gladiator combat game that ended up evolving into something much bigger and was ultimately released for PC back in 1994. It did very well, won a bunch of awards, and from there The Elder Scrolls series was born.
Why did you decide not to enter the MMORPG realm with The Elder Scrolls?
Well we haven’t thus far because we’ve focused on what the series was always about: epic single-player role playing.
How long did it take to port The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to the Sony Playstation 3 and were there any complications working with the PS3 hardware?
It took a year (we shipped PS3 exactly one year to the day after we released Oblivion for PC and 360). The biggest challenge is always going to be taking a game of this size and scope and getting it to look and play right on a new platform.
How many processors were implimented throughout Oblivion and were you able to accomplish anything special using the Cell Processor?
At the end of the day the PS3 is simply a different machine that handles data in a different way than 360. So we take advantage of the machine’s capabilities to run our games as fast and as efficiently as possible. I don’t know how many processors we used or didn’t use.
