PlayStation fans in my mind are spoiled and don't know what a bad game is. The reason I say this is because, Sony is very well known for having a harsh system of review before games can be released on their consoles. If games don't pass this test then that means the game didn't show the power of PlayStation. Thanks to review, not many bad quality games are released and not many PlayStation fans know what a horrible game is. Instead good games are overshadowed by amazing games and in return we get overlooked games. So here is a list of the top 5 most overlooked games in 2008.
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
I thought it was common for a fighting game to always be overlooked ever since Mortal Kombat became the king of fighters. That is until Street Fighter 4 released and I saw lines of people sitting at Gamestop waiting to get their hands on the title. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was probably the best fighting game I have ever played and this is even after I have reviewed Street Fighter 4. The game brought 3D fighting to a whole new level along with one of the most epic story lines ever created about the greatest comic book world entering the greatest video game world. I could go on and on about how great the game was, but my question is why the game was overlooked so much. Part of the reason may be the abundance of Mortal Kombat titles, but this game deserves a lot more credit than it gets.
Tomb Raider Underworld
Probably the best in the series, Tomb Raider Underworld didn't stand a chance for the time it came out. Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2 lurking just around the corner from Tomb Raiders launch date, many just didn't notice the hot Lara Croft standing there. The announcment of exlusive download content for 360 may have disheartened the PS3 fans, but then again the game sold better on PS3 than it did on any other platform. I had more enjoyment out of this title than I did with pretty much any other title the rest of the year. In fact if Resistance 2 didn't offer its online play, I would say I enjoyed Tomb Raider more. The release date hurt this game more than anything.
Devil May Cry 4
Yet another title hurt by its release date is Devil May Cry 4. Instead of releasing around other big name titles, this game released extremely early on in the year. The hype was up, the reception was extremely high, but the title just couldn't last the rest of the year and was easily forgotten mid summer. PS3 fans may be disgruntled about Capcom releasing the long lasting PlayStation exlcusive on Xbox, but hey this was a great title and still deserves the credit of a top quality game. Not only did DMC4 please the fans, but it may have brought new comers on board as well. Great job Capcom and here is to another sequel!
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Easily one of the best shooters of the year, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was just plain overlooked for some odd reason. The game had a good launch date and carried on throughout summer but died down shortly after that. The update that brought levels from Vegas 1 online made the game ten times better and brought back a lot of the fans but the game was still under rated and doesn't get a whole lot of attention after summer releases. Metal Gear Solid 4 overshadowed this game for PlayStation fans but is still going somewhat strong till this day.
Mirrors Edge
The game has great anticipation but due to the short length many were turned off by the title. The game was great and took a whole new perspective to the first person style of gameplay. People love hiding behind things in Killzone 2 but gave to respect to the controls this game offered at all. The game also suffered from a poor release date by being overshadowed by bigger named titles. If the game was bit longer and offered better online game modes I think we would all still love the title, but instead its fading away in the under rated stack of games.
So these are top 5 games I believe were under rated and overlooked last year, and already this year im seeing several titles that will fade away. Fear 2 was already pushed aside for Street Fighter and Killzone 2, so who knows where we will find it come summer. There are plenty of titles to look at, especially for PS3 gamers, so keep your eyes peeled and open up to more games! |
