Review - X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Review: Amnesia Was Never This Much Fun

Another big plus is the quality of the voice acting. Lines are delivered believably by all the main game characters and even by the guards you kill. Sound wise, they nailed the claw sounds as well as Wolverine's customary growl. Explosions sound like they should and the different guns present in the game (ie rocket launchers, grenade launchers, automatic weapons) each have their own distinction sound.

"But how does it control?" I hear you ask. Wolverine controls just like you would expect, fast and precise. When I'm playing, I can't help thinking that Wolverine would be a Jaguar or Tiger. The response time of the controls is excellent and with his leaping ability, you're never out of range of an enemy for long. His movements when shimmying or climbing are fluid as are his jumps.
It is not uncommon to quickly clear a roomful of enemies and be upset that there are no more. Combat is brutal and very fast and you can dispatch your foes through stabbing, beheading, ripping them apart and other special finishers that you unlock during the course of the game.

The graphics are excellent for the most part, although I did feel that there could have been a touch more detail in the jungle levels. Things looked a bit under developed for what the PS3 is capable of, especially now. However, it is a kick to see Wolverine heal. At one point in the Weapon X level I was intentionally blowing things up so I could zoom in and watch his skin regenerate.  In terms of models, they are very detailed and with some of the bigger boss fights, quiite large. Thankfully, there were never any clipping or other graphical issues. The dev team took their time to stamp out the bugs.

In terms of enemy AI I was pleasantly surprised. Rather than take the easy way out and just have reams of enemies come at you with no care for their safety, enemies in the game would utilize cover, verticality and squad tactics to bring you down. They would block and counter attack as well as radio for help when they needed it (usually just before they died!).

There is also a wide variety of special abilities you can use. Called Mutagens, when you find these you can swap them out for other depending on your situation. You can also decide how Wolverine levels up as you are alotted skill points based on kills. Some of the things you can increase are health, claw damage, speed and berserker rage among other things. This keeps the game fresh and gives you a reason to keep playing.

Overall, this game was a very pleasant surprise and worth its full price. If you are a Wolverine fan, you should have this in your collection.

8.0
Graphics
A little more detail on teh jungle leves would have been good, but overall a solid effort.
8.5
Sound
Excellent sound effects. Combat sound crisp and clear. Voice acting was believable as well.
8.0
Gameplay
Easy to come to grips with yet hard to master. Fast paced action as well as good AI tactics should keep you playing for quite a while.
9.0
Replay Value
Lots of things to find such as historical Wolverine figurines and unlockables such as every major Wolverine costume ever used. Couple that with the ability to tailor Wolverine's skills to match your playing style, and you'll be happy for quite some time.
8.3
Overall
Solid game one that does justice to the Wolverine character and franchise. Good for fans as well as those new to the mythos. Recommended!
