Originally released by Sony in Japan during 2003, Holy Invasion of Privacy is now available in the US for download. The game is a mix of an old school dungeon masters game with elements of dungeon building, and even a slight pinch of tower defense. However, does this crazy combination of genres manage to mix, or is it like oil and water?
The game's story mode acts more like an arcade mode, where you must complete the game in one sitting without any checkpoints. Each level becomes increasingly difficult, but your task always remains the same: hide Badman within your dungeon and defeat your enemies before they reach him.
Training mode teaches you the basics of dungeon engineering, and features over 30 challenges to help you gain the skills needed to play the game. It's extremely helpful, and if you choose to skip this, you'll be clueless as to how you play the game... You’ve been warned
Some of the challenges task you with creating a certain number of creatures. For example, one requires you to create 20 Lizardmen within a time limit. However, they become increasingly difficult, eventually asking you to create and master Dragons.
Overall, the game is fun and can easily get addicting. However, the learning curve is rather steep, with the difficulty level severely increasing in the fifth level. Its trio of heroes will mercilessly and brutally murder your minions, and carry your evil servant Badman right out of the door kicking and screaming. You can spend hours, if not days, trying to work out a strategy, but until you learn to maximize bonuses and upgrade systems, no strategy will succeed. Once you do manage to work out the trick to winning, assuming you haven't yet broken your PSP in half from frustration, a single run through of the game will last you about half an hour.
Despite its short length, it is quite handy for a quick, on the go game.
Once you complete the game, you’ll unlock a new, even harder mode called Holy Home Invasion Robbery Badman: Why Does This Always Happen To Me? In addition, there’s also a hero editor allowing you to create custom challenges—a great feature which adds increased replay value.
At the end of the day, the game is a joy to pick up and play even for a few minutes, although you’ll need a lot of practice in order to master the game.
