Move further down the road and you run into Ratchet and Clank Future, which was on the road to become the first AAA game on PS3. Even more is Resistance 2, taking the biggest hit of them all. Resistance 2 was a quality game that Insomniac was hyping heavily, and while it had interest, Sony seemed to be elsewhere. RFOM was the first game to gather a massive fanbase on PS3, who could possibly ignore it? That is unless Killzone 2 was being hyped as the “best FPS ever created.” Again Sony focused more on Killzone 2 at all the major events and made it seem more special than anything coming out. Sony did move Killzone 2, to leave the holiday season to Resistance 2, but that’s where LBP jumped in. Another one of Sony’s hyped games stealing the holiday spotlight from Insomniac.
It seems to happen to every Insomniac game released lately. Lack of advertising support, more hype geared towards other games, and being shafted at major press events. Now the question is why is this happening?
The first conclusion comes from a conversation I had recently with a fellow PCN writer, Nick. He stated it’s most likely due to them pushing out games on a yearly basis. There is lack of time to hype between each game. When one game is released, people look forward to the next. He stated this in reply to me being an Insomniac fanboy and praising them doing it. How dare he turn something positive into a negative!
However after further questioning, it may be true. If Insomniac waited a year, maybe two, between each game would you enjoy it more? If Insomniac wasn’t pushing Ratchet right now, they would obviously have more support behind Resistance 2, is that what we want? Do we ignore Resistance when Ratchet is announced and vice versa? Does Sony not bother to feature them because Insomniac would be featured too much? It’s all possible, and while I’d absolutely hate not having at least one Insomniac title in my collection a year, maybe they should hold back on one game. Give Resistance 3 the breathing room it deserves perhaps? After all if Naughty Dog didn’t spend all their effort and time on just Uncharted 2 would it be so much better than the first? |
