Brink, the latest game from Splash Damage, is already being hyped as a graphical powerhouse, and from the gameplay demo Paul Wedgewood showed, there is some truth to that statement.
Unfortunately, no one was allowed to take pictures at this presentation, so I'll try and walk you through what the game looked like.
In simple terms, Brink is a cross between Killzone 2 and Mirror's Edge, with the addition of co-op. One of the producers of Killzone 2 is working on this game, and it shows.
A lot of the design, the way the character runs, and the environments look like Killzone 2, except more colorful. Then there's the way you can control the character. Similar to Mirror's Edge, Splash Damage have used blended animations to allow you to jump over obstacles when sprinting towards them. You can also slide under obstacles, in the same way as Mirror's Edge.
Then there's the co-op, which is a very nice addition to the game. The single player campaign can be played on your own, and if you want, you can allow up to 7 other people to join you during the campaign, at any time. There also seems to be a lot of replayability in this game, as you can choose to fight as the rebels or the law enforcers. So hopefully we'll be able to play two different campaigns in Brink.
There is a decent character customization element, in which changing your body structure, affects how fast you can run and which guns you can carry. It isn't as good as the Fallout 3 customization, although the fact that the difference in body structure affects how you can play is a great feature.
Graphically, Brink looks very good, in fact it's probably better looking than a lot of games that are out, though it was clear that the game was running on a 360 devkit or PC. However, it still doesn't look as good as Killzone 2, it's close, but the lack of atmospheric effects, make the game look flat in some ways. It is however, still in it's pre-alpha stage, so there's still hope for the game looking even better.
Brink is scheduled for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in Spring 2010.
