Point Lookout
Welcome to the swamps of Point Lookout, where thick fog fills the air and mutated hillbillies roam the land! Fallout 3’s fourth expansion pack offers plenty of new land to explore, but does the trip down south warrant a return ticket?Point Lookout starts with you taking a river boat from the Capital Wasteland to find a woman’s run away daughter. When you arrive downstream, the captain notices smoke coming from a nearby mansion. As it turns out, the owner is under siege by locals gone tribal. After a fast paced battle, the owner, who is a ghoul, nicely asks you to find out why the tribe wants him dead.
The story of Point Lookout lies outside of the primary quest line—you'll meet interesting characters, take on side quests, and learn about the tribe and swamp folk living there. Much of the plot relies on backwater stereotypes ("Slough loves CHUCK!"), and the themes of inbreeding and voodoo oddly bring Leatherface to mind. Despite this, it’s entertaining and there are some great moments along the way.
Unlike the linear Operation Anchorage, Point Lookout focuses more on exploration and isolation—you can’t bring your dog or a companion, but you’re free to wander wherever you like as soon as you disembark. The story plays out through a series of five quests, rounded out by a set of five additional side quests and plenty of other spots to explore.Point Lookout doesn’t raise the level cap, but it does add a few new perks and weapons including shovels, double-barrel shotguns, and the microwave emitter. While they are cool and fit the game well, they don’t have the MUST HAVE appeal as, say, a Tesla cannon. This DLC is the biggest expansion thus far, and although it’s easy to rush through the main quest in a couple of hours, hardcore scavengers will easily take up to ten hours to see what all the bogs have to offer.Overall, the content is interesting and provides quite a challenge for experienced Fallout 3 players. Point Lookout adds miles of new territory to Fallout 3 with a sense of freedom that matches the core game better than any of previous DLC packs. The quality of Fallout 3’s DLC has been on an upward climb, and Point Lookout continues that tradition.
