Can A Relationship Survive Hardcore Gaming?
Posted on December 8, 2009 by Erik

So, I just watched a very real looking video through Youtube: Asian Girl Destroys PS3. Normally, this wouldn't be news however it is interesting when a major gaming site, in this case 1up.com posts it on the front page. As someone who very much enjoys games and gaming (not just PS3 but mobile and PC as well) and has been a gamer since the first Nintendo, it really gave me pause to think about how games and gaming can co-exist with a relationship.

Consider this: many of us gamers are guys and gaming is one of the ways that we relieve stress, chill out and relax. Also consider that for many of us, the games were there LONG before we had any interest in girls. Games are a place where we can lose ourselves in a good interactive story and become what we can't be in real life. It is a mental break from the things that we deal with daily.

BUT, how do you know when this past time, this hobby is becoming destructive? Well, one tip is what we see in the video. But, if you find yourself blowing off get togethers with friends because you want to hit that all-important level 80 in WoW (World of Warcraft), you might want to stop and reconsider where your priorities are. If you are in a relationship and you find that video gaming leads to hours on the couch, not talking with or spending time with your girl then you definitely need to consider whether or not you are ready for the responsibilities of a relationship.

And of course, if you're jobless and spend all your time on your system of choice instead of contributing to the household (as we saw in the video), then you need help.

Now, whether or not the video was "real" is up for debate but from what I see, the anger was NOT faked. The gentleman in the video obviously has issues as I certainly would not be playing til 3AM in the morning if I was him. There are far more fun things to do right?

Absolutely! Gaming is an amazing time and one of the best ways to WASTE TIME BY ENJOYING IT! I have been a gamer for over 20 years (i think..lol how long since atari?) and been married for 8 1/2 years, father for 7 years. Never has gaming given me what a family can: true happiness. That been said, it does take from both parties to understand that its not "gaming"'s fault but of the space and time we give each other. My wife broke my Ds. Nah the word is SHATTERED UNTO THE FLOOR when I wouldn't take her side in an argument. I was pissed off and eventually worked through it and now in my family of four we have 3 ds and 1 dsi (Among many other systems). What was the key to it all? Just like stated in the article. TIME WITH YOUR LOVES OF YOUR LIFE: FAMILY, WIFE, KIDS, MOMS, DADS, AUNTS, UNCLES, FRIENDS, AND EVERYONE ELSE YOU LOVE! Cmon guys if you are obsessing over a game more then providing your family then you have no right to wield a gaming controller. Let it go and come back to us when you have realized this is just a damn good time we would all like to share. Not life in and of itself. GAme oN !! ! !
