Whilst Magic Ball (or Orbz as it is now known) was focused on bringing breakout into the 3D arena and Shatter was focused on giving us a stylized and crazy brick-breaking game, Hyperballoid HD is one that sticks very close to the original Breakout and Arkanoid games.
The gameplay is simple, break all the bricks, and don't let the ball go past your paddle. As always there are power-ups and power-downs, although the amount of power-ups in this game far outnumbers the power-downs. There's also a lot more variety power-ups than what you usually see, for example you can get a standard cannon, but also a flamethrower which has a limited range, or a one-shot powerful laser beam. There are about 30 different power-ups/downs, and most of them vary on the standard power-ups in older games. For example, the usual split the ball into 3 power-up is available, but also one that splits the ball into 9 balls. Unusually, these power-ups are also usable, even when one is in use, meaning you will have almost 20 balls bouncing around the screen at some points.
In addition to the power-ups, you can also collect gems in each level. Collecting 3 gems gives you an extra life, meaning you'll want to collect these more than the power-ups. There are also a lot of power-ups available in each level, and you can tell which brick will give you something, because it will be glowing.
Although this is essentially a classic Arkanoid game, it does do some things differently. The levels for example, are not completely static like retro brick-breakers. There are quite a few moving parts, and breaking certain bricks can make others become loose so that they can move within the level. There are two campaigns, which altogether have 100 levels to play through. One campaign seems to be designed on ancient civilizations, and therefore the bricks are arranged into shapes such as ships, horses etc. The other campaign has pictures of space as background images. |
