No, it's because you need to pay a license fee to use the DVD logo and be able to play them, so Nintendo figured that everyone's already got a DVD player so why would they bother making you pay extra?

There will eventually be a luxury version of the Wii that has all the bells and whistles, but it's only set to be released in Japan as of yet.

Okay, I guess I need to explain this. DVD is a trademark, the format was created when a bunch of companies got together to do the format, so if anyone wants to use their format they HAVE to pay them money. Even if they called it DvP it would still be their format.

So why nintendo did not do it????? they are being too selfish

well not really i can understand that most people have plenty of DVD players, and it would make sense not to put it into the Wii as standard, it would save on production costs.

NinjaSimon

Exactly, it's like not putting in high-def graphics, because hardly anyone has a high def tv.

i understand, although it does have an option to give out 480p, but its not really high definition

wouldnt that be considered some sort of monopoly over the product ? Especially if there are no other players in the industry.

NinjaSimon

Yes, it is a monopoly, but no one tried to bring in another format, there wasn't a point. DVD was good enough and that was the end of it. Once VHS took over you could still buy BETA, but there really wasn't a reason to.

MattZani

it's not a monopoly as such, because no one's annoyed with it, its not crushing someone elses product, because most manufacterers got together and decided to make one product, to help the market.

DVD would have been a plus for the wii tho.

Everybody has a DVD player already, no point in makeing the Wii DVD readable, maybe in the future.

And there was an interview with a guy from Nintendo saying that the Wii had the capabilities for HD, but they'll worry about that later.

i dought they will make it dvd readable in the future its like you said, most people have a dvd player, and its capable of 480p high definition if you can call it that but thats a bout it at the mo

Well, for everyone else but the Japanese, lucky Japanese.

Anyways, they did say their NEXT cobsole would have 1080p, or higher if anew resolution comes out. (Wasen't there like a 2160i/p that just got made or something?)
