We really hate going back on stuff that we reported on just days ago, but that's how things go in this business sometimes. So, first it was a maybe, then a definite yes, but now we're very sorry to tell you that it appears Nintendo will not be confirming DVD playback for the US and Europe -- at least for the time being. Our sister blog, Wii Fanboy, has the story, and reports that only Japan will be getting a Wii with DVD playback sometime in 2007. However, don't lose hope just yet DVD player-free Wii fans (seriously? you're out there?), because GamesIndustry.biz also reports that Sonic Solution, the company that's providing Nintendo with the appropriate DVD playback software, said that it signed a "worldwide agreement" for its new software to be included on the Wii, and that the software would be released in the "latter half of 2007." So, that could mean American and European Wii zealots will get what you've been yearning for -- or it could just mean that Nintendo and Sonic Solution are conspiring to tease you.

I feel these words must be eaten.
and like snowthedirtbub said, DVD players are $20 usually now, there's no real point in adding it to the Wii unless you could have extra features other than just plying the movie, like being able to play with the picutre with the wiimoe or something.

I'll admit that DVD playback on a Wii would be a totally useless feature... but it's one of those kinds of useless features that I would still use, even though I have absolutely no reason to. It's the Eighteenth Rule of Geekdom: The more pointless the feature, the more you secretly want it included in your technology.

The Wii LOOKS like a DVD player so it would be perfect. LoL.

That's pretty crazy they're finally adding DVD. I mean the PS2 had it since launch.
they cant add HDMI the graphics card cant handle HD they are using last gen technology your wii is basically up to specs with the original xbox but i am suprised that they added a dvd feature now maybe we will start to see wii death by the millions.

I don't think the Wii can handle HD. They should just release a Wii HD.

yeah they should, the wii can only be played with standard connections which sucks because i want to play with HD graphics
look forward to Wii two maybe we will see HD graphics then but you guys have to remember the Wii wasn't built to be a high end gaming platform its a everybody range "affordable" console. the reason i put " " around affordable is because they are using last gen hardware which means it costs them near to nothing to make them.

It's actually pretty much the same as a PS2, graphics wise.

The Wii doesn't need a DVD player. Everyone already owns one, whether it be standalone or built into another console.
Well Nintendo is getting a DVD which is unfortunately for the customers because it will drastically decrease the life time of the Wii since it is using last gen tech.

Well, a lot of people still use DVD, so it's not that bad of an idea.
