Was gonna write a news post about this, but seeing as Sony's CES conference is tomorrow, I'll wait til then. Anyways, this was posted on an editor blog @ Ars Technica.

We've heard from many of you that 3D technology is something you're interested in seeing at CES, and Sony has one of the most impressive displays of 3D at their booth... but you won't learn anything about it.

"Don't get caught up with specs," the Sony representative told me. "We're not going to talk about specifications. This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction." The idea was just to show the technology to people, to see if they would be interested in sitting at home, wearing a dorky set of black glasses, watching content in 3D.

I couldn't pry details about how the 3D affect was achieved, or if the display could turn any source into 3D, but what's clear is that, glasses or no, the 3D affect is amazing. Sony showed off Wipeout HD running in true 3D, and I was ready to whip out my credit card right there. Frank and I both agreed, this was one of the best demos of 3D technology we have ever seen.

"3D has come a long way, hasn't it?" the representative asked me. Sure it has, but give me some details. We can't get excited if all the press gets is a short tech demo. The crowd around the display was large, and filled with "ooohs" and "aaaahs."

This probably won't be the last 3D display we see at CES, but as a proof of concept, our appetite is whetted. Sony claims that they have Gran Turismo Prologue playable on the display, but I just wanted to take one home. The company is hedging its bets about how long it will take to get this level of 3D into your home, but if this tiny taste was any indication, there is a ton of promise.

We're promised more 3D surprises from Sony's even larger press event tomorrow, so hopefully we'll get some more information.

When Sony makes huge claims like saying "We decide when next gen starts" THIS is the kinda stuff I want to see. This could be big, if done right. Hopefully this doesn't turn into something really gimmicky, but is used effeciently and creatively. Can't wait for tomorrow's show!

should be interesting to learn about, though I figure its one of those "gotta see to believe" tech

Sony has the rights to a new type of HD screen technology that has the flexibility and thickness as a piece of paper thats going into market late Q4 i believe. Perhaps they'll integrate it with the 3D to make something uber awesome? Imagine a tv screen that wraps arund your head... full HUD, 360 degrees, AND 3D?!?!?

Sony's quote about them deciding when next gen happens is exciting to be sure... but may be just an empty promise. Remember, Microsoft beat Sony by a full year last time, and that was barely 3 years ago... new technology already?! Market ain't ready

I heard Sony is also the first company releasing tv's that accept 3d broadcasts, the football games that were shot in 3d for example were all done because of Sony. Its kinda neat but all the 3d things ive ever watched were nothing special. The guy said its like going from SD to HD and well i dont know, like stated above its probably a experience thing....

The thing im afraid of is this doesnt turn out too well and we are completely stuck going 3d even if we dont like it. Next up is 4d though lol, PS5 will spray water on you when it rains and turn up your ac when its cold and do a bunch of weird things to get you fully in the game haha.

If thats the case, I may never play Act 4 of MGS4 again, even though its by far my favorite =P

It's an Organic LED display. .2" thick, about like a credit card. Ever seen Cash Cab when cieling lights up!? Same kind of thing. Each other panels in the cab could be a TV.

Only problem is I hear OLED's have a very poor lifespan, and are virtually irreplaceable, necessitatiing a steady stream of replacement screens... Expensive to be sure.

Yeah. when they come out I'd love to get one of those Walkman's with the OLED screens but I'm afraid the the screen would give out in a year or so. Then what?

I hope they fix the problem with the lifespan of the OLED screens. sure would be nice to have one.
