I've recently run into some problems playing certian DVD's and GTa sa on my ps2. What I'd like to know is whether its just the lense (my PS2 is almost 4 years old) or do I need to buy a new slimline. I'd just like to know before I go wasting my money on either.

I have this same problem. Only a few of the games I owned would play and I thought it was lens problem. So I checked on the internet, but something went wrong and now my ps2 wont even turn on. Ill have to figure out how to fix it eventually. Most of the games I own are on ps2, so I have been only able to play a few games and I am getting kind of tired of them.

ninjasimon, the lens is most of the time the problem, if your ps2 started having a hard time reading discs, then stopped completly, then clean the lesn

be extremely careful cause I wasnt and thus created a huge problem for myself when I broke the cable that is in between the base of the system to the the eject/reset buttons. Until I get one of those cables and figure out how to get the last two screws out of the system so I can open it i am screwed, I opened the system at first, but had to close it because i didnt want my parents to see ps2 parts lying on the floor. I mean how would you act if you saw your kids (when you have kids of course) $300 system in pieces. I certainly would be happy. Anyways when i closed it i must have tightened the screw too much and therefore can not open it again. i am thinking of using a drill to open it. If I were use a phillips bit for it and use the drill in a reverse motion which is used to loosen a screw i might be able to get the screw out. The only problem is I am kind of scared to do this, because i meant damage something else when drilling.

Well my brother's friend's dad works with PS2s and he can chip them so I'll probably ask him about it.
On a side note: what is actually on the lense to make it dirty? (I know how to prevent dust getting on it but I haven't really done so until recently.

TA-DAH!
After a few minutes of searching I found not only a guide to opening your ps2 carefully: http://www.marcosmoreno.org/ps2/ps2.htm
But that the site www.lik-sang.com that I mentioned before sells the replacement cables! :D
good huh? I'm gunna try it out now with my dad.

My first PS2 stripped the white gear inside. I could reset it but it would do it again in a couple of days so just went for a new one.

don't worry, even by using force on the screws wont break anything "vital" in there, the worst that can break is the "screw towers (i don't know how to say it, you'll figure it out when opened)"
and ninjasimon, it is dust that make it dirty, use some coton (Q-tips) with alcool to clean it, then dry it totally, it should work afterwards, and if you have a spare make-up brush, clean the PS2 totallt, it's never bad to get it cleaned up

excellent next week ill borrow my dads cordless drill from his store and I will open that ps2. Next time though I will just screw in the screws part way. as they, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" its a good saying

"fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me"
i like that :D
and well, everybody should open their PS2 at least 2 times, to get to know how to do it perfectly, without breaking stuff, and to see where every wires plugs and NOT FORGET to plug them back in. Can't imagine the frustration if you forget to replug the fan, and the processor overheats and melts, or you forget to replug the power-supply wire, and have to open it all again, and this wire is kinda far, you have to remove 4-5 parts to be able to replug it

Well I managed to spill orange juice (in my sleep) all over my controller so I had to open that too :P. Normally it wouldn't be much of a problem but my controller has a ventilation system and therefor large gaping holes in the side so it just went straight through, I decided to rinse it out with extremly hot water (well it hurt my hand). The dry it out with my hair dryer and leave it for a couple of days.

I never open thing unless if i absolutely have to. I like to leave things the way they are. Thats why I dont want to open up my pc when I buy a new router for my network. Cause with the router i want to get you can only ahve an internal network adapeter. It kind of sucks that I have to do it but oh well.

well, opening a computer is easier than opening the PS2, so you can't have a hard time

I haven't had just a few problems. Mine broke before God of War even came out.

i've never had problems, and i used to leave it on in a small cupboard with the doors closed, and loads of wires whilst i was at school!
