View Full Version : Anybody Good at Drawing

Anybody good with the pencil that dont mind helping out others? lol

Well Im getting back into it and I still cant draw people worth a damn. If im staring at a picture of someone, or looking at something I can draw it perfectly. Almost to the point of it looking like a tracing. That just doesnt feel right to me though.

So I go and try to draw my comic on my own. (note i have actual artists working on it, i just wanted to try something to show them an idea) However i fail miserbly. Obviously its entirely original so i have nothing to look at to base it on, no picture of batman or something to stare at and copy.

I do the whole stick figure, then circles and squares, then fill it in, then do the details and I cant do it properly. Its mainly the face...Given enough time ill get the muscles and other parts of the body done correctly to an extent, then the face looks like crap.

Another issue I have is proportions. I dont know how to get differnt views, how to make arms bigger smaller etc...I dont know how to give things depth correctly. Note I saw Stan Lee and Steve Ditko do the whole "draw lines of depth and field of vision" then you follow the lines and it gives it the right depth etc...But I want to know how you just do it on a given note.

Practice practice practice...I know. Ive been drawing for months now, and i cant get faces down lol, i need help in some way.

Just say this now because Ive gotten extremely interested in the game industry again and im thinking of switching from film to game design. Note ill still be a writer for either one on any given day, but i want to learn 3d really bad. and it starts by learning this.

Do you have any tips on how to draw things? Ive been practicing and im getting better, I can at least draw people without them looking like complete crap now. I still look at things though...I really badly want to get away from that. I just want to be able to pull out a peice of paper, think of something, then draw it.

I read tutorials and such all the time, Im getting better at drawing but i cant draw on my own. For example to draw a person ill need to look up a pose that i need then draw it, change it into what i need etc...I couldnt even draw my own comic for a while haha.

i have a tip...maybe you could my an action figure, and the pose it in various poses and try to recreate any angles you are having difficulty with, then you will be able to see what it should look like....

also what you could to is take pictures of it from different perspectives and really study how it works...

for angled heads you should draw a cube and uild the head withing it....and place guidelines in areas of importance....and follow tem around the cube....eyeline, base of the nose and mouth line etc

Now thats a really good tip, thank you! Im gonna try it here in a sec, ill post what I get out of it.

That drawing is brilliant, just wow haha. Are you gonna color it?

gaf
01-11-2009, 08:01 AM
Nah, i tried colouring it once and it looked bad...so i just keep it plain...here's another...this is when i was testing out perspective drawings....(the one above was 2 point perspective).

this is 1-point perspective

gaf

not an architect...but i did learn car design in university....and got some tips from there....and using perspective lines make things better

Dustin S.

Do you use perspective lines for car design too? Ive been interested in that as well. I like watching guys like chip Foose do his drawings, its just awesome.

anyone know of any art classes here in california

Dustin S.

If you have any comic shops around you, head there and see if they offer anything. My comic shops have saturday things where people can get together and help everyone out. They do writers work shops too, which i love.

Other than that there are a ton of classes like this during summer, but they cost money.

Gaf, I'm jealous haha! I can do figure drawing but I suck at drawing like backdrops and stuff.

@Dustin, just keep looking at examples if you have to man. Eventually, you'll be able to do it from memory - or at least, that's how I learned.

Here's a picture of Wolverine I drew a while back:

yes, i do now...i found it keeps things looking accurate....and another good way to tell if a drawing looks correct in perspective it to draw on thin paper, then once the drawin is finished flip the page over and see if it looks right when its 'mirrored' ....because your eyes adjust to the way you draw, and flipping it give a whole 'new perspective'

you will notice that digital artist do it also, they will mirror the image they are working on to get a better overall view of it.

Im proud of that one. If you cant make out what it is, go look at Metallica's ..and justice for all cover lol.

Was looking at a gun (note the lines are straight, the angle i took the picture made them curved)

gaf
04-11-2009, 06:05 PM
your style has very simplistic lines, and cartoon / anime style....the gun lacks detail for me...and not a huge fan of the trigger section....could do with more detail and scale adjusting.

here's what i mean by detail....i know i skimp out on details in some areas, i can be quite lazy with stuff in the distance. Also i need to work on scale of things in distance etc....but i leave it for the next sketch etc.

Done with pencil and scanned in.
http://forums.thegnomonworkshop.com/picture.php?albumid=172&pictureid=929

i am working on another sketch with a desert / canyon scene vibe...just need to do a bit more details and scan it in.

Dustin S.
04-11-2009, 07:09 PM
Yeah i try to do that but i fail lol. I didnt scan mine, i took a picture with an average camera, so your missing alot of details too. Like in the metallica one i have cracks on all the bones and stuff, but i know what you mean as its not as in depth.

Dustin S.

Go to photobucket or imageshack and upload them there. It will give you a " [IMG]" code for the picture, copy and paste that here.

trediddy
04-11-2009, 11:33 PM
oh do i have to have an acoount on there

Dustin S.
04-11-2009, 11:39 PM
One of them you dont, i forget which one

X_Racer1
04-11-2009, 11:44 PM
Photobucket requires you to register for a free account but the basic free account is more than enough for almost anyone who needs such a service, from the looks of it Imageshack you can just straight upload to and they host your images for anyone to see where Photobucket allows you some control of your photos, allows you to get basic statistics of who views your photos and keep all your uploaded photos in one place where Imageshack doesn't.
