Have you tried turning on the controller when it's plugged in?

Sony might get you a new controller, but then you wouldn't have a controller.

sounds like a bad controller, usb port should charge all ps3 controllers. just plug it in and hit the ps button.

sounds like a bad controller, how exactly did you get it through dell? i would give them a call.

I wasn't talking about the PS3 ports not working. I was asking if it worked in any other ports other then then PS3s ports.

clearly it doesn't work in that external usb charger. Does it work in any other usb port/charger?

Might be the cable. I can't really think of what it could be.
All the digital cameras I've used (grand total of two), use the same cable as the controller. something to try I guess.

if you guys are using wall plug usb's they shouldnt work. the act of pushing the ps button is to tell the controller that it is connected, with the wall chargers there isnt anything for it to connect the controller to. with the ps3 charge stations they have little chips instead of just usb plugs. does this make sense?

I thought all usb ports would charge the controller. And the controller has to be on to charge, right?

The chip thing makes sense to me.

ANY USB to MiniUSB will charge a PS3 controller aslong as it is plugged into a PS3 console.

That's actually not true. The PS3 controller doesn't need to be on or "paired" with the PS3 to charge. If you plug a powered off controller into the USB port of a powered on PC, it will start charging immediately.

Aceshigh113, the USB port on your adapter might be faulty. Two of the USB ports on the front of my PS3 do not make a good connection, so I can't charge my controllers in them. You could have be experiencing the same difficulty with your charger adapter.

Try this: Plug your controller into your PC (powered on) with the same USB cord. If it begins charging successfully, you'll know the controller and USB cord work together, and that will leave the charger as the culprit.
