It sounds like the Blu-Ray laser has failed which is why you would be able to play DVD's and CD's but not PlayStation 3 games since all PS3 games are on Blu-Ray disc and the console has two separate lasers, one for Blu-Ray and one for CD-DVD and only one has probably failed. If the console is under 1 year old the reapir is free under warranty otherwise it will cost $150 to repair.

the PS3 has 2 different lasers? i jus tthought that the Bluray laser could read DVD and CD and it only had one. but either way try just gettin a lens cleaner kit and try that and see if that works

Blu-Ray is based off a different type of laser than DVD so two lasers are required to be able to have backwards compatibility with DVD's and CD's. More specifically a DVD drive uses a 650 nanometre red laser where Blu-Ray requires a 405 nm blue-violet laser, hence the need for two different lasers. See Wikipedia's article on Blu-Ray for more info.

hmm tha tis pretty interesting and would explain why taking the BC out of the PS3 wqould cut down on the cost but dont the systems that dont have BC with PS2 have BC with the original Playstation?

The lasers have nothing to do with backwards compatibility, they are in all PlayStation 3 models otherwise certain models wouldn't play DVD movies. To achieve backwards compatibility that PlayStation 3 needs at least the PS2 Graphics processor on board as it can't emulate both the PS2 Emotion Engine and the PS2 Graphics processor. Since having this extra chip costs money Sony cut it from new models to save on production costs, the best model PlayStation 3's had both the Emotion Engine and the PS2 Graphics processor so they didn't need emulation and could run almost 100% of PS2 games(20GB & 60GB models), then to save money they phased out the Emotion Engine and created the 80GB PlayStation 3 (MotorStorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle only, not the current 80GB console) that relied on emulation, it was compatible with 70-80% of games, then they completely phased out all PS2 parts which spawned the 40GB, the current 80GB model and the current 160GB model.
