Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Review
Posted on November 26, 2007 by Victor Dangelo

The Ratchet and Clank franchise began back on the PlayStation 2.  During the last generation of gaming the series has quickly garnered a very big fan base.  Fans have fallen in love with the characters, the visual presentation, the hilarious voice-work, and addictive game play.  Now straight off their launch success with Resistance, Insomniac has tried to hit another home run bringing Ratchet and Clank to the next gen with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

The first thing which must be mentioned and brought to the forefront is the fact that the same great storytelling from the past Ratchet and Clank games is back once again.  This time out though the game seems to be more like a full-blown animated movie the way the story is presented.  You will have points throughout the game where you will literally be laughing your ass off, and other parts where you will be genuinely interested in how things play out in the cut-scenes.  This makes it far more appealing to the older audience, while still keeping the humor for the young and old alike.

As soon as you boot up this game you are going to know that you are probably playing one of the best looking video games to date.  To say that Ratchet and Clank is gorgeous is a complete understatement.  The sheer scale of everything before your eyes will absolutely blow you away.  You can stand there, move the camera around, and take a look out into the futuristic city right at the start of the game.  You will be able to see things moving so far in the distance it is insane.

When you get moving in the game it only gets better as well.  The way in which the battle sequences work are extremely smooth in that the animations from attacks, explosions, etc. all flow together very nicely.  There will be times when you may be blowing up a dozen baddies at once, watching them explode and having bolts flying every which way.  There is just so much going on during the game it really will have you in awe.

The other great aspect during Ratchet and Clank on the PS3 is that the use of colors and design.  The retail box states that this is the closest any game has come to looking like a Pixar movie.  That truly is truth in advertising here as the game is damn close to that point.  The character’s movements, the color, attention to detail in every world, and more will have you loving every minute of what you see.  The only hiccup in the visuals is a few framerate problems during cut-scenes.  Since these are not during game play though they do not detract a thing, many may not even notice them.
