Stereoscopic 3D possible on PS3
Posted on December 1, 2008 by Nikhil

Andrew Oliver, CEO of Blitz Games, recently spoke at the 3D Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles about a new technology his company has developed called BlitzTech, which allows the PS3 and 360 to display stereoscopic 3D HD.

For those of you that don’t know, stereoscopy is a technology found in 3D movies that allows for the illusion of depth. However, while common in movies, this technique has never before been possible on consoles. Only a few years ago, a representative from Lucas Arts even stated that this technology would be impossible on current consoles, and would still be extremely difficult to render with next gen technology. Considering such a preconception, Blitz Games is understandably proud of their achievement: “This is an incredibly exciting and huge step forward for videogames. Our BlitzTech technology will prove beyond all doubt that we are already doing what some industry experts have said is impossible on today's game consoles. Our highly tuned engine is capable of producing real-time interactive graphics that are close to offline rendered CG movie quality.”

It should be noted that not all TVs are capable of displaying stereoscopic imagery. However, BlitzTech will allow games to run in either 2D or 3D by simply “flicking a switch.” In order to check whether your TV is capable of displaying this incredible technology, simply check your manual or call your manufacturer.

Sounds great. Hopefully most Standard TVs could support it, if not all HD TVs. That'll be a great addition to the feature set of the PS3
