Japanese media buffs can now breathe a collective sigh of relief. as the not-very-technically-savy Grandmothers of Japan will no longer be able to buy them the wrong version of their favorite movies.
Japanese corporation Infinity Storage Media has developed a disc that can hold both standard def DVDs and high def Blu Rays on the same disc. By using a special dual layering process, they are able to burn the DVD data first, and then burn the Blu Ray data on top of that. The resulting disc can then be played on both standard DVD players and Blu Ray players.
This technology will be used by producers to put both versions of a movie on the same disc, eliminating the need to have both a Blu Ray and standard version of the title. Unfortunately, the technology is Japanese only for now |
