Sony: PS3 is a better value than 360, Wii
Posted on January 7, 2009 by Nick

While obviously the PS3 is the most expensive console on the market, Sony would like to remind consumers that it provides "the most features and functionality out of the box".  We just received this e-mail from them, comparing the price of the PS3 to the Wii and 360, upgraded to meet the PS3's standards:

The 2008 holiday season was an exciting time for video gaming and the Blu-ray side of the interactive entertainment industry, and 2009 promises to follow suit. As consumers continue to invest in their entertainment needs this new year, the feature sets of the three multi-functional gaming systems -- PLAYSTATION 3, Xbox 360 and Wii -- become that much more important to consider.

PLAYSTATION 3 has always been about streamlining the gaming and entertainment experience by giving consumers the most features and functionality out of the box, there is no immediate need to upgrade anything to get a rich entertainment experience, as the console comes standard with:

Built in Blu-ray drive for HD movies and mind-blowing games
Built in Wi-Fi for wireless gaming and Internet access
Huge hard drives for storing games, movies, music photos and more
Free online gaming and entertainment access through PSN
Ten year's of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new     services and features

The Xbox 360 and Wii offer a set of features in their own right. However, when you take a look at the feature offerings side by side, there is only one true winner in delivering total value and price.

We’ve compared the lowest entry points from each manufacturer -- PS3 80GB - $399, Xbox 360 Arcade - $199, Wii - $249.

I think, though, the real thing you have to look at is this: Sony's trying to market the PS3 as an all-in-one machine. However, I'm sure most people would be content with just a video game machine, and compared $199, $249, Sony is gonna lose out. I personally haven't watched a Blu Ray or used half of the PS3's media content. Last generation, you certainly didn't see Sony promoting the PS2 as an all-in-one machine(it wasn't), so I'm not sure why they took this route this time...

I expect Sony to be more aggressive with their Blu Ray campaign in 2009. Previously there was still a battle going on between HDDVD and Blu Ray. Although, I will admit that the streaming Netflix is a nice counter from Microsoft, but I don't know if you are able to stream HD content. Sony needs to get their head out of their*****when it comes to HOME. the majority of people don't want to spend their time pimping out their e-crib. i hope they have more game content related plans with Home

Considering a half decent Blu-Ray player is well worth $300 these days ... the PS3 id worth every dime. After reading tens of reviews a few weeks ago, every site concluded that the best valued Blu-Ray player was the PS3. A friend of mine went to his local DVD/Music store to buy Casino on DVD and the employee told him that they weren't even offering it in that format anymore .. only DVD! Blu-Ray will pick much faster than everyone thinks it will .. and once it does .. those Xbox users will wish they invested into a PS3 :P

Why wouldn't you compare this to the pro system bundle that is 100 bucks less then the ps3, has the harddrive, comes with component cables (wtf sony you made me buy hi-def cables even though that's what you are touting your system as). This comparison is like saying that the entry level Porsche is better then the entry level Toyota. It has nothing to do with price. How about comparing apples to apples next time.
