Job listings made by video game developers are always an insightful way to keep up with their latest projects, even when there is no word coming from the mouth of the horse as well. For example, SOCOM franchise creator Zipper Interactive listed a job posting for someone someone in tune with massively multiplayer online games just a month prior to unveiling MAG at E3 2008.
And now, it looks like this may be the case with 2K Game's Boston branch, the studio responsible for the critically acclaimed 2007 shooter Bioshock. Multiple new listings have popped up looking for people experienced with multiplayer design.
"Almost every game has a multiplayer component these days, but only one two or three of them are good enough keep people coming back day after day. If your title isn't going to be one of them then why bother," says the lead multiplayer engineer listing. "The BioShock team is betting big on multiplayer and plans to stay at the top of the charts."
Further, the lead multiplayer level designer listing even specifically mentions Bioshock and it's lack of a multiplayer mode, implying that the developer intends to change that. "BioShock had no multi-player mode. We don't believe in throwing in something that can't go head to head with the big boys. No applicants will be considered who aren't able to demonstrate they've got the skills to build an industry-changing multiplayer design."
If Bioshock managed to be a genre redefining game, even without multiplayer, then Bioshock 2 may just be able to raise the bar even higher with it.
