Videogames based on movies, movies based on videogames, we have seen it all and are usually suckers when it comes to buying them. So why not have the luxury of having both built into one disc to save time and money? In an act to help sell more PS3's, and make Blu-ray even more amazing, Sony is thinking just that.
“We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc,” said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PS3. “There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn’t it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year.”
Analysts have already noticed that Blu-ray movies such as The Dark Knight help sell the console along with the big name games so bringing the two together could catch the eye of many consumers. With current Blu-ray discs capable of holding 50GB of data and games normally only taking up 20-30 GB of that space, the idea is completely possible. The package would obviously retail at a value price cheaper than buying separately and if the bundle is right then sales will do better. Imagine getting The Dark Knight along with Resistance 2 for a discounted price in one trip. It may not be full complete games like that, but hey a demo would be better than whats offered now.
They also stated that a feature similar to the digital copy service will be offered to allow us to transfer videos to our PSP. Sony is already in talks with studios to offer the package and expects the package deal to hit shelves sometime in 2009. There is also a plan to start bringing Blu-ray specials exclusively to PS3 in a similar fashion. For example the upcoming Command and Conquer game will include bloopers, behind the scenes, and strategy videos along with the game on Blu-ray. So it seems as Sony finally caught on that their Blu-ray technology can do more than even they imagined.
The service would obviously be a great boost to Sony's PS3 so here is our cheers to getting the idea on the market.
