Resident Evil 5 producer defends the control scheme
Posted on March 3, 2009 by Nick

Resident Evil 5 has been a hot topic for debate.  From wild claims of racism to dated control schemes, long time series fans are lining up on both sides of the picket fence.  In a recent interview, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi defended the title's controls in response to all the heat they were taking.  By limiting the players actions, he insists, it actually creates a more suspensful feeling.

"We went in knowing that we weren't making a typical third- or first-person shooter; we were making a Resident Evil game. It was important for us to go with the design choices that would make the best Resident Evil game that we could," Takeuchi explains, "... when it comes to Resident Evil, we feel that by imposing a restriction on the player you actually increase the tension that they feel while playing. Finding the balance between that and the player's frustration is very important when approaching the design of a game like this.  I think that by imposing certain restrictions on the player you actually help to heighten the fear and the tension, and, ultimately, you create a better horror game."

So what do you think?  Is hindering the player the best way to create tension, or is there a more ideal way?

Resident Evil 5 is a survival horror title developed by Capcom.  The latest entry to the popular franchise, Resident evil 5 is due out on March 13, for the PS3 and XBox 360.

I guess it comes down to patience, in a way. I love RE4 and I love the RE5 demo even more, but I totally understand why people don't. Especially if you haven't played 4, it's a pretty steep ramp up to just dive into the demo. I understand their philosophy and I think it works in Resident Evil games when they find the right balance.. I wouldn't say that hinderence should be a general gaming convention, though. It's one of those things that's kind of unique to the series, and while there are definitely more realistic and innovative ways of creating tension, it can be a lot of fun if you accept it for what it is. The stress of the combat becomes a rush. But it's just as easy to be aggravated by it, too. I guess it just varies from gamer to gamer.

I've never played a RE game until the RE5 demo. At first the controls did take me by surprise but a couple of minutes into the demo i was taking off a couple of zombie heads without even blinking.Don't know what all the fuss is about!
