Resident Evil 1 Next-Gen Remake Incoming?
Posted on April 29, 2009 by Shak

This article was written a few weeks ago, but I was reluctant to post it due to one major counter-argument; Resident Evil 1 has been remade a LOT of times. But then I saw this article, which is talking about a Resident Evil remake on a system that already had a port of a remake (yes that sentence makes sense).

We're sure that most of you have, by now, played and completed Resident Evil 5. But a question that pops up during the game is the possibility of a Resident Evil 1 remake. Why? Because Capcom has already done a lot of the work.

Let me show you what I mean. Resident Evil 1's main characters are Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker, all of which have already been modelled in full next-gen 3D. On top of that, the main setting of the game, the mansion has been modelled and textured to a certain extent. The outside of the building has been modelled completely, and part of the inside of the building. Some of the cutscenes from Resident Evil 1 are also shown in Resident Evil 5, completely re-rendered in-engine as flashbacks of Chris' memories. So as you can see, a lot of the work has already been done.

How would Capcom go about remaking Resident Evil 1? I guess Capcom could use the same engine they've used in Resident Evil 5, meaning the game would use the new control scheme (and hopefully improve it). They could even release the game as DLC, or release a Disc-based version as usual. Resident Evil 1 was originally released for the PlayStation 1 in 1996, and has been remade for the Gamecube in 2002 (and ported to the Wii recently, with a new remake coming soon), and a port of the original was released on the DS in 2006. Capcom now has the chance to bring the original game, with new gameplay mechanics to a brand new audience in full HD graphics, and it's obvious that they aren't averse to remaking games.

Capcom should remake the first Resident Evil because it is a game that was actually scary, and was still part of the Survival Horror genre, which Resident Evil 5 has strayed from. Resident Evil 1 also contained many puzzles, a feature that is minimally present in the latest installment to the series. This would be a remake that would satisfy both fans of the series and new gamers, as long as it is done in the right way, however this is all speculation and blind hope. But would gamers be up for yet another remake of this game, or has it been milked enough?

Capcom has never seemed adverse to the remake business, I never really liked the controls of the first game, I wouldnt mind strolling back through the mansion with the new setup though

Great story man, and I definitely agree about a remake of the first. It's probably one of my favorites from the series.

Quick correction: None of the flashbacks in Resident Evil 5 refer to flashbacks from Resident Evil 1. I think Shak is mistaking the flashback of events that happened after Umbrella Chronicles—Chris and Jill infiltrating Spencer's castle with RE1 content. Granted, the settings are *similar* to the settings of Resident Evil 1, but to be accurate, the flashback memories in Resident Evil 5 are NOT of events in Resident Evil 1. :)
