The NPD group has released the sales numbers for the gaming industry for the time period of April 2009, and it's a pretty bleak month for all, barring the DSi. The PS3 ranks in at 127,000 units, trailing the XBox 360 at 175,000 and the Wii at 340,000. This marks not only a significant loss from March, but also from last April, down by 32%, and is also the 6th consecutive month that the PS3 has failed to surpass sales from it's previous year. The latest figures puts the PS3 at about 824,000 units sold year-to-date in North America, representing a loss of 25% compared to last year at this time.
Albeit, April 2008 was a big month for the industry in general, with Grand Theft Auto IV and Mario Kart Wii both launching during that month, this still does not bode well for the PS3. Only one PS3 game made the software top 10 list, with The Godfather II at 91,000 units.
The PSP was also down from last month as well. If there is a silver lining in all of this, it seems the PS2's price cut has helped reinvigorate the console a bit, surging to 172K consoles sold, the highest monthly total to date. Hey Sony, think that would work for the PS3 too? |
