With the end of Sony's 2008 fiscal year, the Japanese mega-corporation held it's annual earnings briefing in Tokyo late last week. Sony revealed in their financial report that they intended to sell 13 million PS3s over the 2009 fiscal year, a near 30% increase over the 2008 fiscal year. Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda told investors that the comany was rapidly approaching the 'breaking even' point of manufacturing the console. It's currently sold at a 10% loss, but indicated the company had a few cost cutting procedures planned to hit that mark.
When the PS3 was first launched in 2006, Sony sold the PS3 at a 33% loss, the $600 console cost roughly $800 to produce, so coming this far is a major step for Sony. Further, this may hint that a price cut is indeed around the bend - the cheaper the console is to make, the cheaper Sony can provide it to the public. |
