If you've been wondering exactly what the cost for production of a blu-ray player is, I've got news for you. According to Taiwanese disc drive maufacturers at this point, a player costs around $100 USD to make, with most of that sunk into chipsets and head. However, these same manufacturers have stated that this figure will drop by 50% in 2010 to (basic math skills FTW!) $50 USD. The reason? Competition. There are more and more manufacturers in this particular arena and as such they are all trying to undercut the other. Good deal for consumers I'd say. Of course, no one knows exactly when these savings will be passed on to the consumer, but it is a safe bet to say "soon."
