As probably all of you already know, the PS3 has been cut to $299 and has been flying off shelves. This is great news for PS3 wanters and even better news for Sony and their "slumping" sales, but why now? Why not wait till the holiday rush is in or for a game like Uncharted 2 to come out?
John Riccitiello of EA stated "It's a bold move done precisely at the right time." He explains that waiting till later in the year would cause PS3 demand to be pushed aside from all the consumers wanting the other latest gadgets when retailers have special sales. Getting it out now allows them to maximize profits. Now I wonder what Activision has to say?
However lets look at it even more closely. With the PS3 Slim and price cut happening now there are several other factors in play. For one its back to school time for all ages! This allows talk of it to spread more quickly between friends, especially as they haven't been able to talk all summer. Its also back to school for College kids these next few weeks, and I'm sure some of them are asking their parents for a nice dorm room present, and I doubt its a hot lady. Along with that its the begining of the Fall game lineup, with Madden just recently released, Batman coming here soon, and several big hitters like Uncharted 2, Ratchet, Assassins Creed 2, and COD MW2 all in a row the timing couldn't be any more perfect.
There is also a lack of technology as a whole right now, not many new HDTV's on the market so it allows tech sites and tech stores to be more focused on their new hardware. Waiting any longer and you run into problems with the new Zune and similar products. While the negative side allows Nintendo and Microsoft to make counter moves before the holidays, the risk was well worth it as sales are already sky rocketing up the charts. Lets hope it stays that way!
