A Crack in Time to be Insmoniac's last 60 FPS game
Posted on October 29, 2009 by Nick

Ever since Krazy Ken Kutagari touted that every PS3 game would run in 1080p at 120 FPS, PS3 users have been slated as tech whores.  And to a certain extent, it's true - we get outraged when we hear Bayonetta runs at a slower framerate on the PS3 or that the Orange Box has framerate issues.  In fact, two of the most highly anticipated games out next year, Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III are both slated to run at 60 FPS, something that any PS3 devotee could recite in their sleep.

Insomniac has always been taken pride in providing technically polished product.  Their latest game, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, is yet another example of this, sporting some beautiful visuals at a blistering 60 FPS.  However, they've done some market research indicating that the majority of consumers and critics don't care about a game running at 60 FPS.

Thus, they've come to the conclusion that this will likely be their last game to run at 60 FPS.  They believe that they can achieve higher quality graphics while still mantaining a solid 30 FPS, and that would be a better use of their time.

What do you think?  Better graphics @ 30 FPS or 60 FPS?  Let us know, we'll be sure to share your thoughts with Insomniac.

We've got the tech, I've always found that 60 FPS+ results in a smoother experience

all the best games have 60fps. without it games just feel clunky. ratchet and clank just has a great feel to it because it is 60fps. btw I'd settle for 45fps, 30 is just too low.

It depends on what kind of game it is. CoD4 for example, runs in smooth 60Hz (ähm, means: 60 FPS) and that's a good thing, because the game is very vital this way and you've got a good feeling of the controls. Additionally it's a game with many many turns an fast movement; with 60Hz you always do realize all these fast picture changes without blurring. The same thing applies for Gran Turismo 5 with its both smooth gameplay and graphics. NFS: SHIFT for example runs in 30Hz, what IMO is (in comparison to GT5) a bit too slow in its gameplay AND visual response time... Games like Uncharted 2 work very well in 30Hz, because the attention turns to gorgeous graphics and anti-aliasing, instead of 60Hz dynamic. And it works, IF the frame rate is stabile and doesn't go UNDER 30Hz.

I agree with Gregormeister on this. It depends on the game type. I don't like the fact that we are in next gen and are stepping back to last gen but hey, I'm not a develper. I'm interested in how Insomniac came about this data. Do they even know about the Madden 08 fiasco. Madden 08 on 360 running at 60FPS clearly out sold the PS3 version running at 30FPS. Really I'm up in the air on this one.
