Sony's online gaming and digital distribution network has come a long way since it was announced in 2006, with over 29 million accounts created on PS3s and PSPs worldwide. And as the PSN has continually grown and evolved, so have Sony's revenue expectations for the platform - Sony is expecting PSN sales to triple before the end of the 2009 fiscal year.
According to their Q2 financial presentation, Sony is expecting thier online service to do big numbers in the 2009 fiscal year. Sony expects PSN sales to hit $550 milion before the end of the year, representing a tripling from the 2008 fiscal year, in which the PSN sold $180 million.
Obviously, the launch of the PSP Go is the the biggest contributor to this jump in expectations, as the platform relies exclusively on digital downloads. However, this could also hint that Sony has some more big changes in store for the PSN - perhaps the rumored PS2 downloads will hit sometime before the end of the year? With PS2 hardware sales dwindling rapidly, this would be the perfect time to reintroduce the feature. |
