PS3 Passes 11 Million Units in America
Posted on March 12, 2010 by Shak

Sony can celebrate another milestone today as the PlayStation 3 has now sold approximately 11,761,000 units in the US. Microsoft also has reason to celebrate as their Xbox 360 passed the 19 million mark in NPD figures, with approximately 19,383,900 units sold till the end of February.

These figures are aggregates of official NPD data from the launch of both consoles. For comparison's sakes, here is the VGChartz data that many of our readers feel is unreliable. According to VGC the PS3 has sold 13,124,034 units to date, and their Xbox 360 sales figures are incredibly over-inflated, as they are reporting sales of 22,267,528 units, 3 million more than the official NPD numbers. These numbers are however meant to include Canada as well, whereas NPD only counts the US numbers

At the end of last April, the Xbox 360 had double the install base of the PS3, with 14.9 million 360s and only 7.5 million PS3s in the NPD.

Your figures are wrong. Current NPD totals are: Wii - 27,998,300, Xbox 360 - 19,382,000, PS3 11,761,000.

Yea, learn to count. Your comparing all of NA numbers versus 360 sales in just the US which doesn't include Canada et al. These numbers are correct howeverl; Current NPD totals are: Wii - 27,998,300, Xbox 360 - 19,382,000, PS3 11,761,000. So add in Canada and what not like VGC does ad you have all of NA. 360 is well beyong 19.3 million in NA.

Also, after April 2009's NPDs, the 360 was on 15,061,500 and the PS3 7,613,900 - that's a gap of 7,447,600. The gap between the two is now 7,621,000, so it's actually risen in that time. Wherever/whoever you're getting your figures from, they're completely out of whack.

Indeed, as Jlee says, VG's figures are for North America - US and Canada, rather than just the US. That's why they are bigger numbers than the NPD totals.

360 just barely holding on to it's lead in the states. Not that it matters, it's so far behind in Japan and Europe that it will have been overtaken by the PS3 worldwide by the end of this year. 360 has finished dead last in worldwide hardware sales for the past 6 months in a row and with very few exclusive games lined up for 2010 it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon.
