PCN Reviews the LoSt-CaUzE™ Gaming Headphones
Posted by Dinkar Varma | Nov 8, 2007 17:28

The world of professional gaming is one few of us will ever know. Getting to play in big tournaments with plenty of media coverage and come home with big fat checks. What’s next? Endorse gaming related products of course. I’ve seen some branded products before and they had me asking myself “is this mouse really that much better because it was designed by a Halo 2 pro?’ So when I first received Able Planet’s Lost-CaUze gaming headphones I was a little bit skeptical at their claimed performance.

Essentially these are headphones with ANC or Active Noise Canceling technology. These are endorsed by Quake 4 World Champion Rafik “LoSt-CaUzE” Bryant. Now one thing to note is that he can really make use of a set of headphones like these. The large gaming tournaments that he participates in are always noisy and loud. So to have a set of good quality headphones with proper noise canceling technology can be quite beneficial in an intense death match of Quake 4. What could be a worse than dying because you didn’t hear your opponents shotgun, only to you turn around unexpectedly and be blown to bits just because you didn’t k now where he was. Now I’ll never be a professional gamer (even though in my mind I am) and I haven’t been to any extravagant gaming tournaments to test these… okay I wasn’t invited to any. I did use them in the next best thing though. My review will be based on my experience using these headphones everyday for 2 weeks in various environments. I replaced my favorite pair of Sennheisers with these and came away very impressed at the performance offered by these headphones.

When you first open the box you are greeted with a nice smooth durable carrying case. I can see these would be perfect for when you are bringing your pc to a LAN party or just traveling in general. There are plenty of pockets for the rather surprising amount of adapters and plugs. You can plug these into about anything with all the adapters provided. There is a 5ft extension cord as well. The headphones look quite nice actually from an aesthetic standpoint, hell they get even better when you put them on. I can say without a doubt these are THE most comfortable headphones I have ever worn. There is plenty of padding in the ear cups themselves and this wonderfully squishy and soft material lining the band that goes around you head. Kudos to Able Planet on this, I’m sure they know a lot of their users will be wearing these for extended periods of time as most gaming sessions / LAN parties are long engaging affairs. Naturally these are fully adjustable and the ear cups themselves can rotate and contort, so they are comfortable in just about any listening position. Behind the left ear cup is the switch to turn on the much touted active noise canceling technology, I’ll get into that later.  The cable leading to your iPod, PC, Nintendo DS, etc has the volume control. I would have much preferred to have the noise canceling on / off switch on the volume control unit itself.  You will forget to turn it off seeing the switch is completely out of your vision. I’ve definitely forgot myself a few times and I can see other people doing this regularly. Unfortunately I haven’t seen a mention of an auto shut off feature either.
