HD DVD Combo Format Review: Star Trek The Original Series: Season One
Posted by Victor Dangelo | Nov 16, 2007 16:01

Star Trek The Original Series: Season One

HD DVD / DVD Combo Disc Set

CBS Home Entertainment

Paramount Home Entertainment

Release: November 20, 2007

MSRP: $217.99

Back in July, just about every Star Trek fan had a huge smile on their faces when it was announced by Paramount and CBS Home Entertainment that the first season of Star Trek The Original Series was coming out on Combo Format HD-DVD discs. This combo format allows for play in standard definition in any DVD player as well as in HD on any HD-DVD player.

The set releases on November 20, 2007 and comes in a 10-disc set which is very nicely put together. The set is boxed in a clear plastic shell. Once inside you will see a smaller cardboard box of sorts which holds the discs in clear plastic case form. There are also sheets to reveal the contents of each disc.

Star Trek has truly been brought into the high-definition era with this box set as the episodes have been restored absolutely beautifully. Star Trek, simply put, has never looked this good before. An immense amount of work was done to restore these episodes to remove any type of dirt, cracks, or hiccups seen in the original film prints. Piece by piece though the arduous task was completed and the results are simply breath-taking.

The episodes in 1080p AVC-MPEG-4 encoding in 1.33:1 look phenomenal for HD-DVD owners. Even the standard 480p DVD side of the discs looks incredibly impressive.

Star Trek does show its age in certain spots but that is simply because of the fact that things have progressed quite a bit since this show originally kicked off. Paramount and CBS also noticeably did a lot of work to the CGI aspect of the episodes. Some fans may appreciate it and others may feel that too much was done and changed. Personally as a Star Trek fan I feel that it only improves them and was a necessary fix. If what was done to the CGI was skipped out on it may look foolish next to the other great video quality outside of the CGI-aspect of it.

In terms of audio the biggest thing here is the fact that the musical score done by Alexander Courage has been completely re-recorded. It was re-recorded from scratch with an orchestra which was set up in size and such to match exactly what the original brought to the table. On HD-DVD the audio is pushed out in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and to be quite honest I was in awe when I first heard the clarity. The classic score has never sounded this clear and inspiring.

The dialogue and such from the audio is also extremely well done as everything is extremely crisp and clear. The episodes even make use of the surround channels when necessary which is very impressive considering the age of the show. From an audio/visual aspect, fans of Star Trek simply could not ask for more.

There are loads of bonus features on both the HD-DVD side as well as the standard DVD side. For HD-DVD owners the special features include many various things which will please any type of fan. One nice thing for HD-DVD owners is the Starfleet Access which works in the following episodes...

                    - Where No Man Has Gone Before

- The Menagerie Part 1

- The Menagerie Part 2

- Balance of Terror

- The Galileo Seven

- Space Seed

-Errand of Mery

How this works is that during the episodes you will be able to have a picture-in-picture which will allow you to run interviews and other extras to supplement your viewing. This is a great feature for HD-DVD owners as 16x9 televisions are made for this sort of stuff.

Spacelift: Transporting Trek into the 21st Century is a 20-minute feature which looks at the process which was gone through to bring Star Trek into the high-definition era. It is presented for HD-DVD and standard DVD owners. This is a great feature of sorts as it looks into just how it was all done. It also includes a showing of the original opening score being re-recorded. Billy Blackburn’s Treasure Chest is a 13-minute feature revolves around Billy talking about the past and Star Trek, very interesting stuff for hardcore fans for both HD DVD and DVD formats.

Interactive Enterprise Tour is another great HD-DVD feature as it allows users to go onboard the new CGI Enterprise’s hangar bay. From here you can go about the ship at all, visiting many different areas. This is very interactive and enjoyable.

The standard definition features are all on the second side of disc 10 and are pretty respectable in their own right, even though most are from previous releases. They include...

- The Birth of a Timeless Legacy

- Reflections on Spock

- Life Beyond Trek: William Shatner

- Sci-Fi Visionaries

- Kiss & Tell: Romance in the 24th Century

- Trek Connections

- Episode Preview Trailers

- Star Trek Beyond the Final Frontier (History Channel)

Also included is a 3-minute preview of the upcoming Star Trek MMO video game.

Star Trek has made its first appearance in high-definition home video on HD-DVD and to be quite honest it comes very close to being absolutely perfect. The biggest drawback to this set is the price point as the lowest we have seen it around various retail outlets have it just below the $200 price point. Regardless though, those Star Trek fans out there with an HD-DVD player lying around may be hard pressed to skip out on this set this holiday season. This is Star Trek The Original Series Season One in its pristine form, looking and sounding better than ever in this HD-DVD combo format box set.

Episodes: 9.0 It is the original season of the original Star Trek series, what is not to love?

Video: 9.0 The original Star Trek has never looked this good as it has been restored absolutely beautifully.

Audio: 8.5 Not as impressive of an upgrade as the video but the re-recording of the musical score is absolute breath-taking.

Special Features: 9.5 HD-DVD owners will be pleased with the immense amount of exclusive features packed in here.

Final Score: 9.2 Highly Recommended
