PS2 Review: Star Trek: Conquest
Posted by Victor Dangelo | Dec 6, 2007 04:31

Star Trek: Conquest

Platform: Sony PS2

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Developer: 4J Studios

Released: November 20, 2007

Players: 1

Star Trek: Conquest has been released on the Sony PlayStation 2 courtesy of Bethesda Softworks. Star Trek fans have been waiting for a release such as this for quite some time as the franchise really has not been given the proper treatment to date in terms of video games. This game may not completely change that perception, but it certainly sways it a bit as this is definitely an enjoyable game for Star Trek fans who like their share of strategy.

The setting of the game is a time of war where every single race is at war as all alliances from the past are now ancient history.

The game allows you to take on the role of either the Federation, Romulan, Klingon, Cardassian, Dominion, or Breen Forces. You are able to lead them in either a campaign mode or just a skirmish mode if you want to jump into a quick battle.

The game plays out in a similar fashion to the type of game you would have if you played Advance Wars or something of that nature. The game is based on a turn-based strategy set-up as you will select a race to start things off. From here you will have a home base where you can branch out by building up your economy, gaining territory through battles, etc. in classic turn-based strategy play.

One very cool twist to all of this though is the fact that in battles you will have the choice to either simulate their result or go into an arcade mode where you will actually take control. You will be giving commands to the ships in order to guide them throughout the battle. In some instances I found that this actually really helped as I won a few battles I probably should not have do to my skill at being able to manipulate the various commands such as lasers, shields, etc.

The great thing about this game is that the six playable races all have different prices for their units, different powers to their units, buildings etc. This means that you will have to adapt a strategy for each of the races or pick one you like and really get to know the race and its units. As you begin to build up ships and such you will be able to upgrade them along the way as well.

There is a very solid amount of depth and balance in Conquest on the strategy front in regards to the various ships, admirals you choose, etc. Whether you choose an attack, defense, or movement admiral is key to the style of game you want to play.

Another very cool strategic system in place here is the research system. This allows you to have outposts with certain skill points appointed to them. You can build up and unlock upgrades through ships from here. You will also be able to do more things such as build up defenses, lower costs for such buildings and more. This unique aspect is key to the overall strategy for the game as you wind up trying to balance what is more important, having a bigger fleet for a quicker attack, or doing more research for a more powerful fleet in the future, etc.

The biggest issue with Star Trek: Conquest is that there really is not a lot of depth in terms of the replay value of this game. There is a short campaign mode as well as a skirmish mode and that is it. Beyond that there is no online multi-player, offline multi-player, nothing. This is a bit excusable since it is a budget title that is being released on the PS2, still though the lack of any multi-player really kills the longevity of the title.. The same can be said about the campaign mode which leaves a lot to be desired. There is no real story in place here and because of that Star Trek fans may be disappointed. You simply start up the mode, choose your options, and away you go.

As states this is a budget title and is available for $19.99 in just about any retail location. Given this fact you really can’t expect to be blown away by the visuals, and to be honest, you won’t be in any way shape or form. The visuals come across overly simple and the framerate is lacking in many instances. The ships could have been detailed a lot more as could the space battle scenes and speicla effects.

The ships as well as the space scenery could have used a lot more flair, as could the special effects. With such little ships on the screen there is no reason that the developer could have put a bit more time into the design and detail in to the ships and their weapons. The game could have actually made for some decent eye candy since a turn-based strategy really does not need to be all that fluid, it just needs to look great with minimal movement.

The audio aspect of the game is respectable but nothing that will really blow you away. The Star Trek tunes are here and in full effect but the audio is not presented clearly or crisply enough to ever really garner your attention, and this goes for the soundtrack too which may disappoint Trek fans who absolutely love the musical score from the franchise.

The special effects and voice work are a mixed bag as the voice work is actually very respectable, only a bit repetitive at times. The special effects on the other hand really leave a lot to be desired. The game could have taken advantage of blowing you away during the arcade battles with some killer audio sound effects. Instead though, you are left with some very average sound bytes which rattle off during each and every battle, very bland.

Overall Star Trek: Conquest is a respectable release on the PS2. For a $20 budget game this is not all that bad. The visuals and audio are a bit lacking and the depth is not quite there with no multi-player to be found. As a single-player experience though there is enough strategy game play here to keep some busy enough to make the $20 worth it. Star Trek fans and strategy fans may want to give this a rental, or at the budget price just go pick it up and see what it’s all about.

Graphics: 6.0

The visuals are very simple, framerate is lacking in many spots, and there are little details on the ships and scenery.

Audio: 6.0

The audio is really lacking as everything from the repetitive voice work to the bland special effects and mediocre music will have you just wanting more from the experience.

Gameplay: 7.5

A very respectable turn-based strategy game which does a great job of balancing various races in what ends up being an enjoyable experience for awhile.

Replay Value: 5.0

The lack of any type of multi-player is disappointing but the budget price saves it a bit. Definitely a rental though as the campaign and skirmish mode lack any true depth in terms of longevity of play.

Final Score: 7.0

Star Trek fans, any fan of turn-based strategies for that matter may want to check this out for the $20 price tag.
