There Will Be Blood 2-Disc Collector’s Edition

DVD Review

Paramount

Release: April 8, 2008

There Will Be Blood was one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, telling the story of a man’s need for two things, money and power. He yearns to control absolutely everything and anyone around him at all times. The star, Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) lives off of the need for power. This is a true classic Hollywood epic in every sense of the word.

There Will Be Blood starts out with an event, where Daniel, while mining for silver, falls when a ladder breaks. He manages to get himself back up though to claim his find, blasting where the silver is located. Upon doing this, he discovers the ground with tons and tons of oil, and suddenly, his eyes light up.More...

Daniel Day-Lewis is truly the star here, playing an incredible role as Plainview. You see this character evolve right before your eyes with his disabled "son", his ego growing bigger and bigger with the more power he gains, and internal demons he continues to fight.

He goes toe to toe with another man with a great lust for power, Paul Sunday (Paul Dano). He also clashes with the twin brother of Paul, Eli, also played by Paul Dano. With all of it focused on one thing for Plainview, power through oil.

The film is presented in 16:9 ratio and appears extremely crisp and clear on DVD. The flesh tones, black levels, and natural appearance of the video makes it a great looking film. There is nothing in terms of any hiccups, grain, or anything of that nature to be found here. The great video quality is a true testament to how the film was shot and created. Everything comes to life through this video presentation.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital English 5.1, as well as 5.1 in French and Spanish.

The audio is equally as impressive compared to the video quality, with the center channel being used to the fullest to showcase the great dialogue and push the story foward. When needed, the surround channels come into play with solid sound effects, ambient noises, and more to immerse you in the film further.

The second disc of the release is where all of the special features are found. You start out with a feature called 15 Minutes, which is a slide show of photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s. You will see images of people whom Plainview emulated, such as miners, those in search for oil, etc. These images are them shown next to clips from the film, showing how true-to-life the film is.

There are also deleted scenes on the second disc of the release. The first is called Dailies Gone Wild, which is an extension from the restaurant dinner seen.

Other deleted scenes are included as well. Considering the film runs for over 150 minutes to begin with though, it is clear why they had to be cut out.

A silent documentary produced in 1923 is also featured called The Story of Petroleum. It explains the story of how people went to California in hunt of oil. You see many very old photos from the 1800s, as well as explanations as to how drilling was done for oil, and more. This gives a great background story for the film, with a lot of facts and educational tidbits being thrown in.

The trailer and teaser trailer are also included.

There Will Be Blood is a tremendous film with a great story. It may run a bit long for the tastes of some, but overall the character development and engrossing nature of Plainview and his foes make this one you will thoroughly enjoy watching. The extras are also great as they go beyond your typical making-of features, giving background information on the origins of the story and more. Highly recommended!

Film: 9.5 A great film with Daniel Day-Lewis absolutely stealing the show, this one will be talked about for a long time.

Video: 9.0 An extremely natural video transfer, crisp and clean with fantastic flesh tones.

Audio: 9.0 The audio is great, allowing the great dialogue to shine, as the rest fills in and formulates engrossing experience.

Extras: 8.0 The extras are put together well with some great stuff, including the documentary on oil. Still though, more could have been added in.

Final Score: 9.0
